Salvation is the reconciliation between a holy God and a sinful mankind. God redeems us unto himself, through the sacrificial death of his son, Jesus Christ, who died on a cross over 2,000 years ago. This sacrifice by his son, bridges the great chasm that separates man from the One True God. Mankind's sin and disobedience has created this great divide. Salvation closes the gap, and bring us into a right relationship with God. It brings peace between God and mankind. Salvation is only found through Jesus Christ.
Acts 4:12 NIV
Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.
Salvation is necessary for anyone who wants to have a right relationship with God, and all who desire his presence in their lives. It is also necessary to receive his divine blessings and protection. Likewise, salvation through Jesus Christ is necessary to go to heaven. Salvation is not dependent on man's good works, nor does being a "good person" count as a qualifying factor. Regardless of man's previous actions, whether good or bad, the only way to heaven is through Christ's death, burial and resurrection. He has done all of the work.
John 19:30 NIV
When he had received the drink, Jesus said, “It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
Anyone who hears the message of Jesus Christ and believes in their heart that Jesus Christ is Lord, and was raised from the dead, and sits at the right hand of God the Father, can be saved. It does not matter about past sin, place of origin, culture, country, or previous belief system. Anyone who believes, can be saved.
Romans 10:9 NIV
If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
A prayer of salvation comes from the heart. It can be as simple as, "God save me. I believe in Jesus. I am sorry for my sins. Please forgive me." There is no certain prayer we must pray, but we must confess Jesus Christ as Lord, and we must believe in our hearts.
If you're not sure what to say, simply pray:
"Heavenly Father, please forgive me of my sins. I have sinned against you. I believe that Jesus Christ is Lord, and that he went to the cross so I could be forgiven of my sins. I ask for that forgiveness now. Please accept me into your kingdom. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen.
John 3:16 NIV
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
